West Ash Designs is a small textile studio based in Minneapolis, MN. With foundations in tapestries, West Ash Designs quickly grew to create functional handwoven goods. We create beautiful, sustainable and well-crafted home goods and accessories.
Story Behind the Name
When I started weaving, my mom told me she had a loom that my grandpa made for her in the 70's. She gave me that loom, and the weaving that was still on it from the 70's :) As a way to honor my grandparents, my mom, and their creativity, I named my shop West Ash Designs after the street they used to live on, West Ash Street.
Hi and thanks for stopping by! My name is Katie Oberton, and I am the founder and creative behind West Ash Designs. I started weaving in 2017 (read more about that here) making wall hangings on small tapestry looms. However, with a deep passion and fascination for cloth and fabric, I knew I wanted to learn how to weave on a larger scale. I took a floor loom class at my local weavers guild in July 2018, and I have been making functional handwoven goods ever since. I have a background in Social Work, and left that career in 2019 to purse weaving. I have a passion for well-made, ethically made, beautiful textiles. I believe in creating pieces that are modern, beautiful, functional and that bring joy to your every day life.
My goals are to create and share beautiful, well-made goods and accessories. My work is all handmade by me, from my home in Minneapolis, MN. Weaving is a wonderful craft that takes a large amount of care and time. Due to the slowness of the process, my work is made in small batches, therefore the quantities are low. Everything that is listed in my shop is what I have available. If something is sold out, please know I am working hard to re-stock it soon! Thank you for your patience and support with this process!
